News at DeBruin's

January 28, 2010: Welcome to the new year!

Well, guess what...the tomato seeds have hit the hydroponic media. At this point they sould be nice and warm and ready to germinate. Our plants will be going through several processes before they arrive at DeBruin's. First germination, then grafting on a different root stock, healing and growing, stick with rubber band to keep the plant upright and then shipping to Thunder Bay in a nice warm truck. Our plants should arrive March 3rd. We are excited to get started again this year and look forward to another fantastic season with abundance fruit, flowers and vegetables.

Keep an eye on us because when we go, we go fast. More tomatoes, more lettuce and definately more hydroponic basil.

Talk to you soon...Cheers!

August 27, 2009: Fresh Beans anyone?

We at DeBruin's have been picking fresh beans for the last 2 weeks. Our backs are still sore. But, you guessed it, only the best for our customers, no matter what the cost.

Our fresh beans are sold by the pound and are washed before they are bagged and cooled. The price is $4.00 per pound and will melt in your mouth when steamed.

Our fresh broccoli is ready to be harvested. These are selling at $2.00 per head.

Please look for us at the Thunder Bay Country Market on Wednesday from 4 till 8 PM and Saturday from 8 AM till 1 PM.

August 12, 2009:  Clean-up, Clean-out sale - 25% off perennials, trees and shrubs!

As usual at this time of year we're reorganizing our greenhouses to make more room for vegetable plants so we can make the most of the remaining growing season.  Help us make some room - all of our perennials, trees and shrubs are 25% off.

Looking for fresh produce?  Our crispy red and yellow sweet peppers are now being harvested daily and are available at the greenhouses and at the Thunder Bay Country Market for $4.99/lb.  Eggplant will be available soon, and as always our tomatoes, lettuces and fresh herbs are being picked at the moment of perfect ripeness.

August 1, 2009:  Aquaponics, anyone?

Arjen's been researching Recirculating Aquaculture Systems or "RAS", also known as "Aquaponics."  This is a closed-loop growing system that uses live fish to fertilize the water that ebbs and flows through a tide-table hosting the roots of a hydroponic crop.  It's a completely natural system that keeps the fishes' living environment clean by using the plants to filter their waste products, and provides the plants with an amazingly fertile growth medium.  Interested in learning about it?  Contact us to check on the latest progress and talk with us about it!
